advising
My responsibilities:
In a Liberal Arts College, the advisor serves as a mentor or guide. You can come to me to talk about any subject that you may have questions about such as concerns about class, discrimination, faculty, family, roommate, grade, study advice, career advice, and more. If I can’t help you, it’s my job to guide you to someone who can.
Most of the time, I work with you to make sure that you take all of your required classes and credits so you can graduate. I also will contact you if I have concerns about mid-term grades, not to belittle you, but rather to help you find a way to recover or do better.
Your responsibilities:
•You are an adult. Don’t expect me to do your thinking for you. I’ll help you think things through, not decide for you.
•Do NOT hesitate to ask for help or guidance about anything. I can at least point you in the right direction. All conversations are kept confidential unless you state otherwise.
•You must read the student handbook (Dr. Mecham’s Bible) and the College catalog and know what you need to do and when. It’s not my job to read them to you or to make sure you meet deadlines (grad plans, etc).
•It’s up to you to make an appointment to see me. My hours are on my door and this Webpage. Email me some times to meet if you want to be sure to meet. You can always drop by, but even though I may not have something on my schedule on my door, I might be listening to an audition, giving a tour, working in the studios, committee work, faculty meetings, etc.
So, I take advising seriously. Feel free to come talk to me about anything that concerns you (getting a tattoo, making a living playing jazz, etc.).
It’s up to you though to come to me.
